The secret to living is giving. If you really think about it, what is life all about? Creating meaning. How do you create meaning in your life? It’s not about what you do for yourself, it’s about how you are able to better the lives of the people around you – your loved ones, the people in your community or the lives of people somewhere else in the world. Meaning never comes from what you get, it comes from what you give.
Gang prevention is an issue that I feel very strongly about. There are countless vulnerable young people out there who are crying out for additional understanding and support. In today’s high-tech world of social interaction gangs, much like businesses, are using social media platforms to recruit members, discuss their lifestyles and educate their ranks. Besides recruitment, gangs also use social media and websites to boast about their lifestyle. Unfortunately, there is no specific demographic of those being recruited, gangs will accept anyone into their ranks. Generally, they attract teenagers who are looking for a sense of belonging. Universally, statistics show that about half of all gang members are younger than the age of 18. It’s important that we take gang related social media issues seriously. One way we can do this is to focus on providing life skills education to our youth, helping them to avoid delinquent behavior and the use of violence to solve problems.
My personal experience with gangs in high school drives my passion for gang violence prevention and is what gives me an even greater purpose to meet this important need. The importance of giving back to society can’t be understated. My wish is to create a ripple of positive impact against the prevention of gang violence, which I hope will inspire others to do the same.
